President Muizzu Emphasises Global Cooperation Ahead of First UNGA Appearance

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted the vital importance of international collaboration for the Maldives’ development, asserting that working with countries around the world is the most beneficial path forward. He shared these sentiments while speaking to the media prior to his departure for New York to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

This visit marks President Muizzu’s inaugural appearance at the UNGA as the nation’s leader and coincides with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives joining the United Nations. He intends to utilise the UNGA meetings to forge new pathways for the Maldives by strengthening international ties and cooperation.

A primary goal of his visit is to spotlight the unique challenges faced by small island nations like the Maldives, particularly concerning environmental threats and sustainable development. He aims to draw the attention of major countries to these pressing issues and advocate for modern solutions to address them.

President Muizzu’s agenda includes attending and addressing an open debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). During his address, he is expected to elaborate on the environmental challenges confronting the Maldives and propose innovative strategies for mitigation.

The president’s schedule in New York is comprehensive, encompassing 14 key meetings and events. He is set to deliver his address to the General Assembly on 24 September, participate in the Summit of the Future, co-chair interactive dialogues, and engage in side events focused on global cooperation. Additionally, he will conduct a series of bilateral and multilateral talks with leaders from various countries to strengthen relations and seek assistance in vital areas for the Maldives.

Emphasising the importance of fostering international ties, President Muizzu believes that the Maldives must develop by enhancing relations with other countries. He plans to assess the nation’s situation and bring attention to issues significant to the Maldives on the global stage.

His participation in the UNGA is viewed as a strategic move to enhance the Maldives’ global presence and advocate for the interests of small island nations. President Muizzu’s visit to New York is scheduled to conclude on 27 September. His engagements are expected to open new avenues for cooperation, particularly in areas such as climate change, economic development, and sustainable practices, which are crucial for the future prosperity of the Maldives.
