President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu formally launched the public consultation phase for the Maldives’ 20-Year National Development Plan on Wednesday at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE). Highlighting the role of public input in shaping the plan, the President addressed the need for collaboration across society to ensure its successful implementation.
In his speech, President Muizzu stated that with effective planning and execution, the Maldives could achieve developed nation status by 2040. He pointed to areas such as modern technology, the digital economy, and addressing core societal challenges as critical components of the development masterplan.
Following his remarks, a discussion panel was convened, including parents, teachers, students, representatives from civil society, and individuals in need of medical assistance. This panel signals the Government’s approach to incorporating diverse perspectives in the planning process.
The Government has set a timeline of one year for completing the plan, and officials intend to propose a constitutional clause granting the plan legal authority. This move, if approved, could make the masterplan a binding framework for future administrations.
The development plan aims to address several long-standing issues in the Maldives, including healthcare, education, and economic diversification. With an emphasis on digital and technological growth, the plan could support the expansion of new economic sectors, potentially reducing the country’s dependence on tourism.
By 2040, the vision articulated within the plan outlines a modernised Maldives with improved infrastructure and a focus on sustainable development. The constitutional proposal, if enacted, may add continuity to the plan’s objectives, regardless of future political shifts.
