State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has pledged to plant at least 500,000 trees over the next five years, marking a significant contribution to the Maldives’ environmental sustainability efforts. This commitment was formalised through an agreement signed earlier today by STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy and the Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim.
The signing ceremony coincided with the inauguration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ambitious programme to plant five million trees during his five-year term. This initiative is part of the President’s broader agenda to create a greener Maldives and enhance the nation’s resilience to climate change.
The government has announced plans to plant over 90 different types of plants across the Maldives within the next five years as part of this programme. The health of these planted trees and their carbon intake will be closely monitored to ensure their contribution to the environment.
STELCO’s participation in this programme illustrates the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility. The tree planting initiative is expected to significantly boost the country’s green cover, contributing to carbon sequestration and enhancing biodiversity.
STELCO’s initiative aligns with the government’s vision of fostering a sustainable future for the Maldives. By actively engaging in this programme, STELCO is setting a precedent for other corporations to follow, demonstrating that business success and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
