Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has stated that recent amendments to the Tourism Act will help address delays in reopening resorts that have been closed for redevelopment. Speaking on state media, the Minister explained that the new changes introduce a set timeframe for such closures, which must be approved by the Ministry of Tourism.
According to the Minister, the amendments state that resorts can only remain closed for redevelopment or other purposes for a specified period, with this requirement formalised through amendments to lease agreements. If a resort fails to reopen within the approved timeframe, the Ministry will have the authority to take action, including terminating the lease agreement. The Minister noted that the government would not be required to provide compensation to the lessor in such cases.
The Minister described the changes as a key step in ensuring that resorts undergoing redevelopment are brought back into operation within a reasonable period.
He also announced that regulations required to implement the amendments will be developed within the next three months. This includes rules for the operation of the Tourism Trust Fund, which is intended to provide financial support to the sector and contribute to industry development.
The Minister stated that the Trust Fund will be financed through sponsorships from tourism-related activities organised by the Ministry, as well as contributions from tourism operators as part of their social responsibility efforts. Funds from investments made under the Trust Fund and other specified sources will also contribute to the initiative.
According to the Minister, the Trust Fund will support various initiatives aimed at strengthening the tourism sector, including education and training programmes designed to enhance the skills of industry workers. He added that the fund will be overseen by a dedicated board, with regulations guiding its management set to be established within three months.
The Minister said the creation of the Trust Fund would provide important support for the tourism industry while also contributing to the broader social sector.
