The Ministry of Tourism and Environment held a stakeholder workshop yesterday to present and discuss the proposed methodology for tracking mitigation actions in the energy and waste sectors.
The workshop was held under the project “Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives)”, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). According to the ministry, this initiative marks a significant step forward in the Maldives’ efforts to enhance climate transparency. The workshop focused on developing tracking tools for mitigation actions and brought together 38 participants from a broad range of institutions, including government departments, regulatory bodies, state-owned enterprises, and academic institutions.
Additionally, the ministry said the initiative aims to equip national institutions with tools to monitor, validate, and report on climate mitigation activities. These tools are essential for the Maldives to fulfil its obligations under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement.
By strengthening institutional capacity and improving data systems, the Maldives seeks to enhance the credibility and efficiency of its climate reporting processes. This workshop marks a critical milestone in aligning national efforts with international climate commitments and improving accountability in climate action, the ministry noted.
Key departments from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment—including the Climate Change Department, Energy Department, Waste and Pollution Control Department, Air Quality Unit, and Ozone Unit—played a central role in the discussions. The workshop also saw active participation from the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Maldives Bureau of Statistics, Utility Regulatory Authority (URA), WAMCO, STELCO, MWSC, STO, MACL, MPL, and Maldives National University (MNU).
