USD 4.2 Million Utilized from Green Fund for Environmental Projects in February

The Ministry of Finance has announced that 38 projects were funded in February, with a total expenditure of USD 4.2 million from the Green Fund.

The latest report on the Green Fund, released by the finance ministry, indicates that the funds were allocated for various projects across the country, including developing coastal protection, water supply, waste management, and sewerage systems. In February, the most significant contributions were made to the construction of coastal protection structures in Kurendhoo and Kolhufushi, and the development of a water supply system in Himmafushi. These projects received USD 934,000, USD 707,000, and USD 324,000, respectively.

The Green Fund received USD5.9 million in Green Tax in February from various tourism establishments, with resorts contributing USD5.8 million of the revenue. The Green Fund was established in 2016 to address environmental issues in the Maldives, as stipulated in the Tourism Act of the Maldives. To this end, a Green Tax of USD6 is levied on each tourist per day at a resort or hotel, and USD3 is charged for each tourist per day at a guesthouse.
