USD59 Million Allocated to Fishermen, Reveals Government

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has revealed that USD 59 million has been distributed to fishermen.

During a public forum titled ‘Ahaa’, Minister Shiyam disclosed that a substantial backlog of payments was awaiting resolution when the current administration assumed office.

Minister Shiyam acknowledged the complexities involved in promptly addressing these overdue payments, attributing the delays to the country’s economic conditions.

Notwithstanding these challenges, Minister Shiyam underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to expediting the disbursement process in accordance with the President’s directives. He highlighted concerted efforts to ensure fishermen received their dues before Ramadan.

As Minister Shiyam stated, the government has disbursed USD 59 million to fishermen since assuming office. However, he also pointed out that an outstanding balance of USD 1.74 million remains owed to fishermen. 

Minister Shiyam reassured ongoing endeavours to settle this remaining sum, reaffirming the government’s dedication to fulfilling its financial responsibilities towards the fishing community.
