The development of a new Polytechnic Centre in Thulusdhoo has commenced with the laying of its foundation stone. This project marks a step towards expanding higher education opportunities in the Maldives. The ceremony was attended by representatives from both the government and the educational sector, including Villa College Rector Dr Ahmed Anwar and the Minister of Higher Education, Labour, and Skills Development, Maryam Mariya.
In November, Villa Educational Services Pvt Ltd, part of Villa College, secured the contract for the development and operation of the Thulusdhoo Polytechnic. This public-private partnership will see Villa Educational Services funding and managing the new facility. The Thulusdhoo council has generously allocated 32,581 acres of land for the project over a 50-year period, with 1200 acres dedicated to water sports training.
Villa College’s Polytechnic will play a crucial role in providing technical training and vocational courses in various fields. A core focus will be on water sports and mid-level tourism, reflecting the region’s economic strengths.
Minister Marya highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it will allow young people in Thulusdhoo to develop their skills and find gainful employment within their own community.
The completed Polytechnic will offer a range of facilities including student accommodation, technical training areas for tourism, and a tourist facility for practical experience. Classrooms, an ICT laboratory, an auditorium, library, administrative areas, staff rooms, student services areas, meeting rooms, and study rooms will enhance the learning environment.
