The Grant Contract for “The Project for Provision of Equipment to Maldives Polytechnic in Male Island, Kaafu Atoll” under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme was signed by Her Excellency Ms. YANAI Keiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Mr. Ahmed Nasir, Chief Executive Officer of Maldives Polytechnic at a ceremony held today.
Under the terms of the grant contract, the Government of Japan committed Nine Million Five Hundred Eighty-Eight Thousand One Hundred Thirty-Two Japanese Yen (JPY 9,588,132), (approximately USD 88,779 equivalent to MVR 1,331,685) for the provision of 5 vocational training equipment for the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning and Mechanical Engineering labs, such as the absorption refrigeration system and the electrical faults in full air conditioning systems, to enhance skills-based training programs.
With a large youth labor force in the Maldives, vocational education and training could enhance the potential of the youth to drive a vibrant and productive economy. This Japan’s assistance will enable the provision of quality skills training programs and equip trainees with skills and knowledge required by the local industries. This could also facilitate the empowerment of the youth and benefit the local community in the long run.
The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) implemented by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives in order to empower people at the grassroots level. Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in broad areas such as education, environment, health, transportation and energy with a view to contributing to sustainable development of the Maldives.
