The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has signed an agreement with the Stockholm Environment Institute US (SEI-US) to conduct a specialised training programme on energy modelling using the Low Emissions Analysis Platform (LEAP). The contract was signed by Permanent Secretary Mr. Ajwad Musthafa on behalf of the Ministry, while Ms. Bonnie Cockman, Director of Finance and Operations, represented SEI-US.
This training, set to take place in the Maldives, will provide hands-on experience with the LEAP-IBC modelling software to around 25 participants. The main goal of this initiative is to enhance the nation’s ability to track greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigation efforts. By doing so, the Maldives aims to meet its reporting obligations under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) of the Paris Agreement.
The training forms a vital component of the broader “Capacity Strengthening for Improved Transparency of Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Maldives (CBIT Maldives)” project. Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supported by UN Environment, the CBIT Maldives project is designed to align the country’s transparency efforts with the requirements of the ETF.
A core focus of the CBIT Maldives project is to bolster long-term institutional arrangements and improve the quality of data management procedures related to climate change. By systemising data collection and processing, and developing robust indicators and methodologies, the project aims to improve the tracking of GHG inventories, mitigation and adaptation actions, and climate finance. Such enhancements are expected to facilitate regular and transparent reporting to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Maldives’ commitment to transparency and improved data management is seen as crucial in informing national decision-making processes and managing climate change challenges more effectively. As the impacts of climate change continue to pose significant risks, these capacity-building efforts are essential for the Maldives to strengthen its climate resilience and sustainability agenda.
