The government has nominated Ahmed Ali Habeeb, the current Cabinet Secretary at the President’s Office, for the role of Chairperson of Bank of Maldives (BML). The nomination comes ahead of the national bank’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), scheduled for 21st September.
According to the agenda published by BML for the upcoming EGM, the government has put forward three nominees for the bank’s board of directors. These nominees are Ahmed Ali Habeeb from S. Hithadhoo, Ali Irufan from S. Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and Mohamed Shahid from K. Male’. Habeeb is reportedly being considered for the chairperson role, although the government has not provided official confirmation on the matter.
Habeeb’s background includes experience in both the public and private sectors. Prior to his appointment at the President’s Office on 17th November 2023, he served as a General Manager at Apollo Holdings Pvt. Ltd. from 15th January 2006 to 16th November 2023. He was also a Board Director at the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) between April 2012 and February 2019.
In addition to his public service, Habeeb is involved in the private sector, currently serving on the boards of three companies: Megaton Pvt. Ltd., Cocobolo Maldives Pvt. Ltd., and The Exquisite Holidays Pvt. Ltd. He is also a member of the UK Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
The outcome of Habeeb’s potential appointment as Chairperson will be determined during the upcoming EGM. Bank of Maldives, as the largest bank in the country, plays a central role in the financial sector, and its board appointments are closely monitored by stakeholders.
