Recalling the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, President Muizzu expressed profound gratitude for China’s swift assistance during one of the Maldives’ darkest moments. “Chinese medical teams and disaster relief experts arrived swiftly on our islands, bringing more than just aid—they brought hope,” he remarked. He emphasised that this act of solidarity cemented the enduring friendship between the two countries.

Highlighting key projects symbolising the robust partnership, President Muizzu mentioned the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge as a daily reminder of what can be achieved through shared vision and cooperation. He expressed eagerness to expand collaboration in areas including trade, tourism, agriculture, fisheries, renewable energy, cultural exchange, and infrastructure development.

Looking ahead, the President voiced support for China’s Belt and Road Initiative, viewing it as an avenue for deeper collaboration that will foster mutual growth and prosperity not only for the Maldives and China but also for the broader region. “The Maldives is committed to playing an active role in this initiative, believing firmly that it will foster mutual growth and prosperity,” he stated.

Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin echoed these sentiments, affirming that China remains committed to supporting the Maldives’ development efforts and enhancing the country’s capacities. She highlighted the 52-year relationship between the two nations as a positive example for others, noting that the partnership has consistently benefited both countries.

Ambassador Wang cited significant infrastructure developments resulting from the collaboration, including the Sinamalé Bridge, various housing projects, and the expansion of Velana International Airport. She assured that China will continue to provide robust support for the Maldives’ development initiatives and welcomed the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen its economy and promote sustainable development, particularly as a Small Island Developing State.

Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral relations under President Muizzu’s leadership, Ambassador Wang noted ongoing cooperation in culture, tourism, trade, and human resource development. She emphasised efforts to strengthen connections between the peoples and cities of both nations, stating that the relationship has evolved into a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”

Both leaders highlighted shared values such as commitment to peace, respect for sovereignty, and the pursuit of sustainable development. President Muizzu lauded China’s leadership in promoting global climate action and its commitment to the Paris Agreement, stating that these efforts resonate deeply with the Maldives as it confronts the existential threat of climate change.

“In a world that is increasingly interconnected, it is these values that will guide us towards a future of shared and mutual respect,” President Muizzu said. He looked forward to continuing close collaboration with China to address pressing global challenges, from climate change to sustainable development.

The event served as a testament to the enduring partnership between the Maldives and China, reflecting mutual respect and shared aspirations. As both nations look to the future, they remain committed to deepening their collaboration across various sectors, contributing to regional stability and global progress.
