State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has commenced significant upgrades to the electricity networks in Malé City. The company announced the beginning of these enhancements via a social media post, explaining that the upgrades aim to improve electricity services amid rising demand during the peak season, which coincides with high temperatures.
As part of this effort, STELCO has replaced the existing 630 KVA transformer located at the intersection of Majeedhee Magu and Sosan Magu with a more powerful 1,500 KVA transformer. This upgrade is expected to increase the capacity of the substation, providing better services to local residents. The company has also shared plans to expand the capacity of the distribution network to meet the growing needs of Malé City’s population.
In addition to these efforts, STELCO has entered into an agreement with China’s TBEA Group Company Limited to conduct preliminary studies ahead of establishing a 150MW power plant in Thilafushi. According to STELCO, this power plant will significantly boost electricity generation for Malé City and surrounding areas, including Hulhumalé, Vilimalé, Thilafushi, and Gulhifalhu. The facility will use both oil and gas to generate power and is expected to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply across these locations.
STELCO’s agreement with TBEA includes the installation of a high-capacity transmission line, with practical works for the power plant also contracted to the TBEA Group. Once completed, the power plant will serve as a centralised energy source, contributing to the long-term electricity needs of Malé City and nearby areas.
