Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal has announced the allocation of 11 islands for resort development as part of the government’s efforts to expand the Maldives’ tourism sector. Speaking during a programme aired on state media, the Minister highlighted the investments being made to promote tourism across the nation, with approximately USD 385 million committed to these projects so far.
To date, around 25 islands have been opened for tourism development, with award letters issued for 11 of them. Minister Faisal expressed pride in the fact that the majority of the investors are Maldivians, reflecting local engagement in the growth of the country’s most important industry. Some awardees have already made payments, indicating progress in advancing these projects.
Despite over five decades of success in the tourism industry, the Minister acknowledged that its benefits have not reached every corner of the Maldives. To address this, the government is preparing master plans for each atoll, paired with marketing strategies tailored to promote tourism development in specific regions.
“Between 4,000 and 6,000 beds will be added through local tourism and resorts, alongside the development of airports in these areas, creating new employment opportunities for youth,” Minister Faisal stated. These projects aim to support regional economies and enhance the nation’s capacity to accommodate more visitors.
Providing updates on infrastructure initiatives, Minister Faisal pointed to the ongoing development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport as a transformative project for the northern atolls. Once completed, it is expected to significantly boost the region’s tourism capacity by increasing the availability of tourist beds.
He also noted that promotional activities to attract international travellers are advancing rapidly, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a leading global tourism destination. These efforts align with the government’s goal of achieving balanced growth and nationwide benefits from the tourism industry.
