Maldives Secures Fifth Consecutive Win as World’s Leading Destination

The Maldives has once again been crowned the World’s Leading Destination at the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024, marking an unparalleled fifth consecutive victory. This historic achievement cements the Maldives’ reputation as a premier global tourism destination, triumphing over 19 renowned contenders, including Dubai, Greece, Indonesia, Spain, and Vietnam.

The accolade was announced during the WTA Grand Final Gala Ceremony, held on 24th November in Madeira, Portugal. Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal, Minister of State for Tourism Ahmed Nazim Mohamed, and Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) CEO Ibrahim Shiuree represented the Maldives at the event.

Expressing his delight, Ibrahim Shiuree stated, “This incredible achievement is a testament to the Maldives’ unparalleled beauty, warm hospitality, and commitment to sustainable tourism. We are honoured to be recognised as one of the world’s most desirable destinations.”

Adding to its accolades, the Maldives was also awarded the title of World’s Leading Green Destination for the first time. This dual recognition underscores the nation’s dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship alongside its tourism appeal.

Several individual properties and tourism companies from the Maldives also received honours at the ceremony, further showcasing the exceptional standards of the country’s hospitality industry.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, is widely regarded as the pinnacle of excellence in the global travel and tourism sector. Winners are determined through a voting system involving qualified travel professionals and consumer buyers.
