Maldives Welcomes AIDAstella Cruise Ship Following Regulatory Reforms

The Maldives recently hosted the AIDAstella, an Italian-flagged cruise ship carrying 2,139 tourists, marking the first cruise ship visit to the country since recent regulatory reforms. Operated primarily for Swiss, Austrian, and German travellers, the AIDAstella docked in the Maldives on 8th December 2024, arriving from Muscat, Oman.

This milestone comes as part of a broader effort to diversify the Maldives’ tourism offerings and is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. The influx of cruise visitors is anticipated to boost a wide range of local businesses, including restaurants, souvenir shops, local dhonis, guesthouses, and retail outlets in Malé and Hulhumalé. Additionally, the economic impact extends to strengthening the country’s foreign reserves and overall economic growth.

The AIDAstella is currently en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, following its departure from the Maldives on 9th December 2024 at 6 PM. The ship is undertaking a 21-day, one-way cruise from Dubai to Laem Chabang, Thailand, which began on 2nd December and is set to conclude on 23rd December.

The arrival of AIDAstella highlights the Maldives’ success in positioning itself as a premier cruise destination in the region. This achievement follows the Maldives’ recognition as the World’s Leading Destination for the fifth consecutive year and the World’s Leading Green Destination for the first time at the World Travel Awards.

With the resumption of cruise tourism, the Maldives aims to further enhance its tourism sector, laying the groundwork for future visits and solidifying its reputation as a dynamic and diverse destination.
