Maldives, China Focus on Expediting Infrastructure and Trade Projects

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held discussions with His Excellency Wang Yi, China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, during a courtesy visit at the President’s Office. The meeting focused on strengthening Maldives-China relations and advancing ongoing projects and agreements.

During the meeting, President Muizzu welcomed Minister Wang and expressed gratitude for China’s support in the Maldives’ development efforts. Reflecting on his state visit to China in January 2024, he described it as an opportunity to enhance cooperation between the two countries. The President highlighted the need to expedite key infrastructure projects, particularly in social housing and road development, which he described as pressing priorities for the Maldivian people. He also shared his administration’s focus on diversifying the economy, including exploring opportunities in agriculture and fisheries.

Minister Wang Yi commended President Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and expressed China’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ development goals. He reassured that China would work towards accelerating the implementation of agreed projects and praised the Maldives for maintaining a consistent position on the One-China Principle. Minister Wang also noted the bilateral relationship as an example of cooperation between nations, regardless of their size.

The discussion comes as the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into effect on January 1, 2025. The agreement removes tariffs on over 95% of traded goods, offering new opportunities for trade and economic collaboration. Both nations anticipate that the FTA will enhance trade volumes and foster closer economic ties.

Both leaders reiterated their dedication to advancing the China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and emphasised the importance of continued cooperation on multilateral platforms. The meeting concluded with mutual pledges to strengthen the partnership for mutual development and prosperity.
