Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to 1965 when the Maldives established its first overseas mission in Colombo. Over the years, the partnership has expanded across various sectors, including education, trade, fisheries, tourism, and defence. The Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation, signed in 1984, further strengthened ties, leading to regular high-level visits and policy discussions.

Sri Lanka also serves as a vital hub for Maldivians, with many residing there for education and healthcare. The Maldivian High Commission in Colombo provides essential services to citizens, further reinforcing the close bilateral relationship. Economic collaboration remains a key area of focus, with ongoing efforts to facilitate trade, investment, and agreements aimed at reducing financial barriers.

As the Maldives and Sri Lanka continue to build upon their shared history and mutual interests, both countries reaffirm their commitment to deepening cooperation and fostering stability in the region.
