Maldivian is set to expand its international operations with new direct flights to South Africa and Germany, scheduled to begin later this year. This development marks a significant step in the airline’s strategy to improve connectivity to key global markets and support the Maldives’ growing tourism industry.
The expansion is supported by Maldivian’s recent acquisition of an Airbus A330-200, the airline’s first wide-body aircraft. With a seating capacity of 264 passengers, the aircraft is already in operation, serving routes to Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. Maldivian also plans to add another wide-body aircraft by the end of 2025 to further enhance its long-haul capabilities.
The new direct routes come amid efforts by the government to improve international connectivity to support tourism growth. Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen stated that these flights would provide greater convenience for travellers from distant regions such as Europe and Africa. “These routes will save valuable time for travellers coming from regions like Europe and Africa, making the Maldives even more accessible to global tourists,” said Minister Ameen.
In addition to the upcoming flights, the government has announced plans to expand Maldivian’s fleet further, with another wide-body aircraft expected to arrive in October. This expansion is anticipated to improve the airline’s ability to serve other emerging markets.
Tourism figures in the Maldives have shown promising growth, with over 500,000 visitors recorded in the early months of the year. The addition of new direct flights to Germany and South Africa is expected to maintain this positive trend and further support the country’s thriving tourism sector.
