Senior Officials Inspect Immigration Area of New Velana Terminal

Senior officials from Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) and the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology visited the New Passenger Terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) yesterday as part of preparations for the terminal’s much-anticipated opening.

MACL’s Deputy Managing Directors, Mohamed Lamaan and Mujthaba Latheef, accompanied the Controller General of Immigration, Commissioner of Police (Retd.) Ahmed Faseeh, and Minister of State for Homeland Security and Technology, Abdul Majeed Ibrahim, on the site visit. A delegation of Immigration Officers also took part in the inspection.

The focus of the visit was to observe and assess the readiness of the immigration area within the new terminal. The visit comes as MACL intensifies final preparations for the terminal’s official opening, a project long in the making and set to significantly expand the country’s main international gateway.

Construction of the New Passenger Terminal began in 2019 and is part of the government’s broader efforts to increase VIA’s capacity to meet rising demand. Once operational, the terminal is expected to handle up to 7 million passengers annually—more than triple the airport’s current capacity. The terminal will feature state-of-the-art check-in counters, boarding gates, and baggage handling systems, as well as expanded immigration and customs facilities.
