The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has published the names of 146 establishments with overdue Goods and Services Tax (GST) of at least MVR 600,000 as of November last year. In the list released on its website last Thursday, MIRA did not reveal the specific amount each party owes.
The list features several prominent businesses in the Maldives, including those in the catering and construction sectors, as well as vessel importers.
MIRA discloses the names of tax defaulters only after repeatedly reminding them to settle their dues, issuing multiple notices, and offering additional time and opportunities. The authority also provides various forms of relief under its policy.
For those unable to pay the full amount at once, MIRA allows payment agreements with instalment options. It further assures that it will not pursue additional enforcement measures as long as the parties comply with the terms of these agreements.
MIRA said in a press release they published yesterday, they will continue to take action against parties that do not comply with paying tax as required. Therefore, they urge the parties that have not paid their taxes or submitted their tax statements to submit the documents as soon as possible or to come to a tax-payment agreement with MIRA.
