The first Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Huda Ali Shareef, formally presented her Letter of Credence to Armida Salsiah Alisjhabana, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, at a ceremony held today at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the ceremony, Permanent Representative Huda Ali Shareef reaffirmed the Maldivian Government’s strong commitment to regional cooperation and multilateralism. She noted the Maldives’ active engagement in UNESCAP’s initiatives, particularly in key areas such as sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
Welcoming the appointment, Executive Secretary Alisjhabana expressed her support for the Maldives’ continued progress and reiterated UNESCAP’s dedication to working closely with the country in advancing its national development priorities and accelerating efforts toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UNESCAP, a regional arm of the United Nations, unites 53 Member States across the Asia-Pacific to address shared development challenges through collaborative, knowledge-based solutions. The Maldives has been a member of UNESCAP since 1971 and continues to benefit from the commission’s technical assistance and capacity-building programmes.
She was joined at the ceremony today by Counsellor Shajna Ibrahim Iqbal and Second Secretary Siyana Shiyam from the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives to the Kingdom of Thailand.
This appointment further strengthens the Maldives’ international presence and reflects its growing commitment to global and regional cooperation in addressing sustainable development goals.
