Deputy Speaker Highlights Maldives’ Regional Priorities at South Asia Cooperation Forum

The Maldives is working to overcome the challenges of sustainable development and economic resilience, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim said during the 6th China-South Asia Cooperation Forum.

Held under the theme “Working Together for Common Development,” the forum brought together leaders and policymakers to strengthen regional collaboration. Speaking at the event, Deputy Speaker Nazim outlined five key areas the Maldives sees as essential for regional progress: improving transport and communications, advancing green economic development, building strong economic ties, investing in human development, and enhancing people-to-people connectivity.

Deputy Speaker Nazim noted that, as a small island developing state, the Maldives faces unique challenges in balancing development with environmental and economic stability. He emphasised the importance of partnerships with China and other regional neighbours to promote inclusive and sustainable development pathways.

Citing China’s progress in economic reforms, infrastructure, and innovation, the Deputy Speaker said these examples offer valuable lessons that can be adapted to suit the specific needs of countries like the Maldives.

He concluded his remarks by stating that development is not merely a policy direction, but a national commitment to ensure that all citizens benefit from the country’s progress.
