Villa College is celebrating a proud moment as students from its Chinese Language Centre achieved outstanding results in the globally recognised Chinese proficiency exams held in May 2025. The results highlight not only the Centre’s commitment to high standards but also a growing interest in Mandarin among Maldivian learners.
Young students sitting the YCT (Youth Chinese Test), an exam tailored for school-age learners, earned a flawless 100% pass rate. Meanwhile, students who took part in the more advanced HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) and HSKK (HSK Speaking Test) also delivered an exceptional performance. Out of 21 candidates who attempted HSK Levels 1 through 3 and HSKK Level 1, 20 passed, yielding an impressive 95% pass rate.
Since beginning to host these exams in January 2025, Villa College’s Chinese Language Centre has conducted two successful exam cycles. In that short time, over 50 students have gained official certification in Mandarin proficiency.
These achievements are more than just numbers on a scorecard. Certification in HSK or YCT opens valuable doors for students, both locally and internationally. The HSK qualification is often a requirement for entry into Chinese universities and for applying to scholarship programmes in China. In the Maldives, fluency in Chinese is also an increasingly valuable skill, particularly in sectors like tourism, hospitality, healthcare, and international business.
Beyond the career and academic benefits, Villa College believes that language learning builds confidence, broadens perspectives, and fosters meaningful cultural connections. For students eager to take their first step into Mandarin, the Centre offers a range of programmes designed for beginners through to more advanced learners.
