Ooredoo Maldives Connects Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi with Submarine Cable, Creating Maldives’ First Private 5G Island

Ooredoo Maldives has completed the first-ever submarine cable landing at a Maldivian resort, linking the ultra-luxury Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi to its wider fibre network. The development marks a significant leap in digital infrastructure for the nation’s tourism industry, positioning the island as the country’s first private 5G-enabled resort.

The cable, which runs through Maafushi and connects to Ooredoo’s Data Center in Hulhumalé, introduces high-capacity, dual-redundant connectivity to the South Malé region. The project was officially marked during a landing ceremony held on 2 August at Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, attended by Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al-Hamadi, and other senior officials.

According to Al-Hamadi, the new connection ushers in a new era of digital luxury, enabling private 5G services and AI-powered capabilities at the resort. “This achievement sets a new benchmark for innovation in the hospitality sector,” he said, calling the project “a vital milestone” in the company’s vision to create a Digital Maldives.

Minister Thoriq echoed that sentiment, noting the company’s 20-year contribution to the country’s telecoms development. “With every advancement, they’ve focused on accessibility and inclusion,” he said, calling the landing “a proud milestone” for both Ooredoo and the nation’s tourism sector.

The resort’s General Manager, TJ Joulak, said that seamless digital connectivity is essential to meet the expectations of high-end travellers. “We recognise the importance of supporting the evolving needs of today’s global travellers,” he said.

The development adds a new layer of technological sophistication to the Maldives’ high-end tourism offering, integrating next-generation infrastructure into a destination known for its natural beauty. With Ooredoo celebrating its 20th year in the Maldives, the company’s focus appears increasingly centred on combining luxury, digital innovation, and national inclusion.
