President’s Baa Atoll Tour Focuses on Connectivity, Housing and Public Services

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s four-day tour of Baa Atoll has focused on outlining planned infrastructure projects and discussing economic priorities with island councils, Women’s Development Committees, and residents. The President is visiting 13 inhabited islands, accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior officials from state-owned enterprises, to gather feedback and provide updates on ongoing and proposed initiatives.

In Kamadhoo, two agreements were signed, one for the construction of a new school building to address space limitations and another for the introduction of seaplane services. The school project is intended to improve educational facilities, while the seaplane link is expected to enhance connectivity for tourism and business.

In Kudarikilu, the President said that stalled water and sanitation projects would restart in August, with completion aimed for within six months from September. Road construction is planned to follow the completion of these works. Other projects discussed include a multipurpose hall, a new mosque, a recreation centre, and completion of the football field.

In Kendhoo, announcements included a land reclamation, harbour upgrade, and coastal protection programme, as well as the inauguration of water and sewerage services. The President noted recent legislative changes restricting council-owned companies from operating in small and micro business sectors, stating the intention is to support private sector activity.

In Eydhafushi, the President said a dedicated infrastructure programme for newly reclaimed areas would be included in next year’s national budget. Planned developments include 1,000 housing units, harbour improvements, a multi-sport complex, a US Dollar ATM service, and upgrades to water and energy systems. Eydhafushi is also among the islands identified for the development of a convention centre, scheduled to begin next year.

The visit to Eydhafushi also saw the inauguration of RTL ferry services and the signing of agreements to establish a Maldives National University campus and build a new facility for Baa Atoll Hospital.
