Economic Growth in Focus as President Continues Baa Atoll Tour

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s second day on tour in Baa Atoll saw a series of announcements centred on infrastructure upgrades, tourism development, and community-focused investments expected to stimulate local economies.

In B. Fulhadhoo, the President confirmed that a long-awaited water and sewerage system will break ground this month, with completion to be fast-tracked. Plans to build an accommodation block for incoming workers were announced for the 2026 budget, alongside initiatives to improve health services, including the introduction of laboratory facilities at the local health centre. Notably, the management of B. Innafushi will be transferred to the council under a joint plan with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, enabling greater local participation in tourism revenues.

On neighbouring B. Fehendhoo, the President pledged to restart stalled water and sanitation projects and committed to building a jetty with coastal protection works in next year’s budget to improve access for residents and businesses. The day also saw the inauguration of Bank of Maldives ATM services and the groundbreaking of a new police station, measures aimed at boosting financial inclusion and public safety.

In B. Goidhoo, harbour development is set to begin this year following a tender to be issued this month, while coastal protection works are planned for next year. A fully equipped health centre and expanded school facilities are also on the way. The President revealed that eco-tourism initiatives would launch this year, with a resort project in Goidhoo lagoon expected to move forward once the development agreement is signed before month’s end. The island’s tourism zone is also slated for electricity grid upgrades to support growth.

Meanwhile, in B. Thulhaadhoo, 100 new housing units will be developed, and the privatisation of 119 reclaimed plots will be facilitated. The Thulhaadhoo Airport project, inaugurated earlier in the day, is set to progress without interruption. Plans for enhanced health services include introducing specialist medical care, particularly for women and children.

The President emphasised that social housing allocations will be determined in line with the needs identified by local councils, underscoring the role of community input in shaping development policy. With investments spanning essential services, tourism infrastructure, and public facilities, the tour’s second day reflected the Administration’s strategy of pairing economic growth with decentralised decision-making.
