IndiGo Becomes First Indian Airline to Operate from Velana’s Terminal 1

IndiGo Airlines has officially begun operating from Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA), making it the first Indian carrier to use the newly opened terminal and the eighth airline overall to shift operations there.

The milestone was marked with a ceremony held at Terminal 1, attended by Ahmed Faseeh, Controller General of Immigration. IndiGo, India’s largest airline and the second-largest in Asia, first launched flights to the Maldives on 15 November 2018.

As part of the move, IndiGo opened its new check-in counters and distributed gift bags to 218 outbound passengers. The inaugural flight to the terminal, 6E1127, was given a traditional water salute on arrival, while cultural performances welcomed the 229 passengers disembarking.

With IndiGo’s inclusion, Terminal 1 now serves eight airlines: Maldivian, Air Arabia, Beyond, Fitz Air, Beijing Capital Airlines, Batik Air, Bangkok Airways, and IndiGo.

Terminal 1 officially began operations on 26 July this year, with Maldivian Airlines as the first carrier to fly from the facility.
