Maldives Reaffirms One China Policy in Official Statement

The Government of Maldives has reaffirmed its continued adherence to the One China Policy, recognising the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing all of China, while also recognising Taiwan as an integral part of China’s territory.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Government of Maldives said this position has been consistently upheld since the establishment of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1972. The government said the stance reflects its long-standing commitment to principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and mutual respect among nations.

The statement noted that the Maldives’ approach is grounded in respect for non-interference in the internal affairs of states and support for peaceful coexistence. It added that this position has remained unchanged over decades of diplomatic engagement with China.

The government also expressed concern over actions by certain parties that it said seek to undermine these principles and interfere in the internal matters of sovereign states. While the statement did not specify particular actions or actors, it emphasised the importance of upholding established norms of international relations.

Reiterating its foreign policy direction, the government said the Maldives remains committed to strengthening its long-standing friendship and partnership with China. This relationship, the statement said, is based on trust, mutual benefit, and shared aspirations for peace and sustainable development.
