Kulhudhuffushi City’s water supply is set to run entirely on renewable energy during the first quarter of this year, according to Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Managing Director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
The conversion follows an agreement signed in June last year between MWSC and Japan’s Kanadevia to transition the city’s water system away from diesel-based power.
Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, Matheen said the system will rely on a full solar setup supported by battery storage, eliminating the need for diesel generation. The desalination plant will be powered entirely by solar energy and is designed to produce 500 cubic metres of water per day.
Under the project, the facility will be equipped with a 500-kilowatt solar system alongside a 1,450-kilowatt battery system, allowing energy generated during the day to be stored and used continuously.
Matheen said the shift to renewable energy will reduce fuel imports, helping to save foreign currency and improve energy security, while also lowering the environmental impact of water production in the city.
The move positions Kulhudhuffushi City as one of the first urban centres in the Maldives to operate its water supply fully on renewable energy.
