The government is preparing to introduce legislation to regulate the use of artificial intelligence, positioning it as a key component of the Maldives’ wider digital transformation agenda under the “Maldives 2.0” initiative.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said a dedicated bill on artificial intelligence will be submitted to Parliament alongside three previously announced pieces of legislation: the Digital Transformation Bill, Digital Identity Bill, and Cyber Security Bill. These measures were outlined during the President’s address at the opening of this year’s parliamentary session, with the administration aiming to establish a legal and institutional framework for the country’s digital transition.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the President indicated that while artificial intelligence presents opportunities for the Maldives to advance technologically, its adoption would require clear regulatory structures and defined legal parameters.
The proposed legislation forms part of a broader effort to digitise state functions, with the government targeting the completion of a fully digital public sector by the end of next year. As an interim milestone, authorities aim to establish a unified network for civil registration services by the end of this year, with the intention of creating one of the most comprehensive systems in the region.
The administration has framed digitalisation as central to improving public service delivery, noting that increasing government efficiency and building a modern system grounded in good governance remain key priorities for the year.
