The Maldives has reaffirmed its support for the One China Principle, restating its recognition of the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing China.
In a press statement issued on 21 May 2026, the Government said its position remains consistent with the stance maintained since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China. The statement said the Maldives regards Taiwan as an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China, citing United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and established principles of international law.
The reaffirmation comes as the Maldives continues to maintain close diplomatic and development ties with China. The Government said it remains committed to strengthening its partnership with China and values the country’s continued support for the Maldives’ socio-economic development.
The statement also said the Maldives looks forward to deepening cooperation with China, guided by shared interests in peace, stability and mutual benefit.
