Air India Celebrates 50 Years of Flights to the Maldives

Air India has reached a significant milestone in its long-standing engagement with the Maldives, marking 50 years since it began operating flights to the country. The anniversary reflects one of the earliest international aviation links established between the Maldives and a neighbouring nation.

The airline first launched services to Malé on 21 February 1976, creating a direct air bridge between India and the Maldives at a time when international connectivity for the island nation was still developing. Over the decades, the route has supported tourism flows, facilitated business travel, and strengthened people-to-people ties between the two countries.

To commemorate the anniversary, special activities were organised at Velana International Airport. Air India flight AI 2239, arriving with 139 passengers on board, was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute upon landing. Passengers were presented with roses and commemorative treats as part of the celebrations marking the occasion.

The 50-year milestone highlights the continuity of Air India’s operations in the Maldives and reflects the broader trajectory of aviation cooperation between the two countries. As connectivity between India and the Maldives continues to expand through multiple carriers and increased frequencies, the anniversary serves as a reminder of the early foundations that helped shape today’s travel and tourism links.
