Airport Upgrades, Housing, and Transport Projects Announced During Presidential Tour

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing tour of South Miladhunmadulu Atoll has centred on major economic and infrastructure-related developments, with announcements spanning housing, transport connectivity, public services, and regional investment priorities.

As part of his commitment to engage directly with communities, the President is visiting 13 inhabited islands across the atoll. Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from key government agencies are accompanying him, with multiple ground-breaking ceremonies and high-level consultations already underway.

In Maafaru, the President pledged a full-scale upgrade of the island’s international airport terminal. He also announced revisions to the health centre development project and the addition of four new classrooms to the local school. Maafaru has also been identified as a target site for new housing projects planned for 2026, in line with the administration’s long-term housing strategy.

Land reclamation is a central component of development plans for Hen’badhoo, with the President confirming that up to six hectares will be reclaimed beginning in November. The new land will accommodate housing, infrastructure, and sports facilities, including a full-sized football pitch. Contractor selection is expected by September, following the completion of engineering designs.

The President inaugurated the new RTL bus service in Ken’dhikulhudhoo and confirmed plans to expand the service in the months ahead. He also endorsed the island’s potential as a “Mangrove Island” for eco-tourism, with ongoing infrastructure upgrades to support this vision. These include improved water and sanitation networks, increased health staffing, and repairs to damaged sports facilities.

In Manadhoo, the President announced that a long-awaited sewerage system overhaul will commence in August, carried out alongside the island’s road development project. He also confirmed that plans are underway to expand healthcare services and to develop a campus of the Islamic University of Maldives on the island. The launch of RTL direct-link ferry services between Manadhoo and Un’goofaaru in November was also announced, along with the inauguration of passport services for the island.

Across the islands, development discussions have focused on critical infrastructure gaps, economic revitalisation, and investment in public services. As the tour continues, further announcements are expected to reinforce the administration’s stated commitment to regional development and fiscal responsibility.
