The Attorney General’s Office launched the new MVLAW website during a special launching event held at their office yesterday.
This collaborative effort, executed in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives and designed and developed by Javaabu Pvt Ltd, is envisaged to transform public accessibility to laws of the Maldives and assist legal practitioners in improving the efficiency of their legal research.
The new MVLAW website offers a comprehensive repository of Maldivian laws and regulations. This is the first official website offering consolidated laws, incorporating all amendments enacted. The website also offers keyword search functionality, allowing users to easily locate specific laws and regulations. Additionally, the platform enables users to track legislative amendments, save legislation for offline referencing and provides a bookmarking feature for easy citation of legislative provisions. As a contribution towards our goals of inclusivity, this website offers a text-to-speech function in Dhivehi, a first for the Maldives.
While the website can be accessed on all mobile devices, an MVLAW mobile application, which complements the website, will be available for users in the coming week.
The MVLAW Website launching event was attended by the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in the Maldives, Ms Pek Chuan Gan, representatives from UNDP Maldives and Javaabu Pvt Ltd, and the senior management and the MVLAW team of the Attorney General’s Office.
During the event, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath thanked UNDP for their unwavering support in strengthening the justice and legal sector in the Maldives. He also extended his appreciation to
the dedicated teams at Javaabu Pvt Ltd and the Attorney General’s Office for their relentless efforts in making the MVLAW project a resounding success.
“This is a key milestone in our endeavour to increase access to information and justice, strengthen the rule of law, and increase transparency and accountability of the government and the legal system of the Maldives. The new MVLAW is such an important and timely intervention. We are taking a significant step towards making laws more accessible, inclusive, public-friendly, and responsive to the needs of the people,” said UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Pek Chuan Gan.
Launching the new MVLAW website marks a remarkable step in facilitating access to vital legal information in the Maldives.
