Bilateral Talks Highlight Indian Ocean Security and Fisheries Innovation

Fisheries and Ocean Resources Minister Ahmed Shiyam has reaffirmed the Maldives’ strong partnership with Sri Lanka in the areas of regional fisheries cooperation and maritime security. His remarks came during high-level discussions held as part of the State Visit of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maldives.

Minister Shiyam highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the two countries, especially within the framework of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). He noted that both nations continue to work together to support sustainable fisheries management and shared marine resource development across the region.

He also pointed to the growing scope of bilateral cooperation, noting that maritime safety and security have become key focus areas. New avenues such as mariculture and innovation in fisheries are expected to be part of future discussions, which aim to enhance the resilience of the Indian Ocean’s maritime economies.

President Dissanayake’s visit, which began on Monday, included a series of consultations focused on strengthening bilateral relations. Topics covered included trade, development planning, and regional maritime governance.
