British Airways Joins Maldives’ Sea-to-Air Cargo Network with First Shipment

Velana International Airport has welcomed British Airways as the latest addition to its growing sea-to-air cargo transshipment network. The announcement was made on X, where the airport confirmed that the airline’s first shipment under this service included 8.2 tonnes of goods routed from Sri Lanka to Canada.

This milestone marks British Airways as the 11th airline to join the Maldives’ innovative cargo network, which facilitates the efficient movement of goods by combining sea and air transport. The sea-to-air model, initially launched earlier this year, has quickly gained traction by offering a cost-effective yet swift solution for exporters looking to connect South Asia with global markets.

With the Maldives strategically positioned as a regional logistics hub, the inclusion of British Airways is set to further enhance the service’s reach. The airport has been expanding its partnerships with international carriers to optimise cargo connectivity, making it easier for time-sensitive shipments to reach destinations across Europe, North America, and beyond.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), continues to attract interest from exporters in South Asia. It leverages the Maldives’ frequent flight connections to key international markets, making it an increasingly attractive option for goods transshipment.

British Airways’ participation reflects the growing confidence in the Maldives’ capacity to serve as a central hub in the region’s logistics chain. As the network continues to expand, it is expected to bring greater flexibility and improved transit times for exporters, contributing to the Maldives’ economic growth and regional trade connectivity.
