China’s New Ambassador to the Maldives Presents Credentials, Affirms Continued Support

The new Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Maldives, His Excellency Kong Xianhua, officially presented his Letters of Credence to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held on Monday morning at the President’s Office.

Ambassador Kong was ceremonially escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional “Haiykolhu” procession, accompanied by the MNDF Drum and Trumpet Band. Following the formal presentation, the President welcomed the ambassador and held discussions on matters of mutual interest.

During the meeting, Ambassador Kong reaffirmed the Chinese government’s continued support for the Maldives, including assistance in addressing urgent national needs. He also underscored the strong ties between the two countries and noted the special importance the Maldives holds for Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Later in the day, Ambassador Kong paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel. Minister Khaleel congratulated the ambassador on the commencement of his tenure and expressed optimism that Maldives-China relations would continue to strengthen. He also conveyed appreciation for China’s longstanding support in advancing the Maldives’ socio-economic development.

Ambassador Kong expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and reiterated his commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership between China and the Maldives.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established on 14 October 1972. Over the past five decades, the relationship has expanded significantly across areas such as infrastructure, trade, tourism, and education.
