A team of Chinese technical experts has arrived in the Maldives to conduct a feasibility study for a road construction initiative in Male’ and Villimale’. The Maldives Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure announced the team’s arrival on Monday in a post on X, confirming the technical assistance from the Chinese government.
The experts have already engaged in discussions with officials from the ministry, and the study will extend until 21 November. Throughout this period, the team will hold consultations with various stakeholders, conduct meetings, and undertake site surveys to gather essential data.
According to the ministry, this study will lay the groundwork for the design and planning stages of the road project, which is supported through Chinese assistance. President Mohamed Muizzu initially outlined the project’s scope during his visit to China in January, noting that a substantial part of the $130 million allocated would focus on improving Male’s road infrastructure.
Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that the government aims to initiate the project in the coming year, with a target for completion within four years.
