The development of new airports across the country is progressing as the government finalises plans and works to secure investment for the projects. According to Ahmed Mubeen, Managing Director of Regional Airports Company Ltd. (RACL), the concept designs for these airports have been completed, and steps are being taken to move the plans forward.
The government aims to establish 20 additional airports, which will include both new facilities and the expansion of existing ones.
In a recent interview with state media, Mubeen shared updates on the status of these developments. He explained that efforts to secure funding for both the completion of ongoing airport projects and the construction of new ones are continuing. With the designs now finalised, the projects are ready to proceed to the next phase.
One of the projects with a completed design is the proposed airport in Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll. Mubeen confirmed that funding and investors have been secured for some of the proposed airports, and RACL is in the process of submitting the necessary documents to the government’s Economic Council.
The government will review the proposals and select the contractors for the projects. With design and funding in place, the developments are moving ahead.
RACL is also working closely with local councils to create a plan aimed at boosting economic activity on the islands where the new airports are proposed. This effort aims to increase the economic potential of these areas.
Currently, there are 19 operational airports in the country, including five international and 14 domestic airports. Development is underway at four domestic airports in Muli (Meemu Atoll), Magoodhoo (Faafu Atoll), Alifushi (Raa Atoll), and Makunudhoo (Haa Dhaalu Atoll). The Muli airport development is nearing completion, with test flights scheduled for March.
