
Dhiraagu, in partnership with Women in Tech Maldives, has successfully concluded the Girls to Code Malé Edition, a programme aimed at equipping young women with foundational coding skills and pathways into the technology sector,
The Malé edition saw 17 participants complete the programme, taking the total number of graduates to 108 since its launch in 2019. Designed for young women with no prior coding experience, the initiative focuses on building practical skills to support entry into technology-related fields.
The closing ceremony was attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, who served as Chief Guest. The event was also attended by Dhiraagu’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ismail Rasheed; President of Women in Tech Maldives, Nahza Ibrahim; and senior officials from both organisations.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed highlighted the importance of technology skills in everyday life and acknowledged the efforts of Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives in conducting the programme across the country to support women’s participation in the digital economy.
This year’s programme expanded its age range to include participants aged 16 to 30 and introduced a Tech and Beyond career guidance workshop. The session focused on career awareness and industry engagement, allowing participants to explore future opportunities and connect with women working in technology.
Dhiraagu stated that empowering women in technology forms part of its sustainability efforts, noting that participants gained skills, confidence, and exposure to diverse career options through the programme. Women in Tech Maldives also expressed appreciation for Dhiraagu’s continued support, encouraging participants to build on the skills gained and pursue further upskilling to support their educational and professional growth.
Participants received hands-on training in coding fundamentals and were able to independently develop mini portfolio websites by the end of the programme. They also completed capstone projects with mentorship from industry professionals. Previous editions of Girls to Code have been held in Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Laamu Atoll, and Dhidhdhoo, reflecting the programme’s expanding reach across the Maldives
