Authorities have held discussions to address potential changes to traffic flow around Velana International Airport (VIA) in preparation for the upcoming opening of the new international passenger terminal.
The meeting took place between the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which operates VIA. Discussions focused on adjustments to the taxi queue system and designated routes for taxis and four-wheelers. Plans were also reviewed for additional parking spaces and the use of a newly planned roundabout near the airport.
The new international passenger terminal, which is now nearing completion, will feature modern facilities designed to improve the passenger experience. Final preparations are currently underway to bring the terminal into operation.
During his Presidential Statement at this year’s opening session of Parliament, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the new terminal is scheduled to open before October this year.
The existing international terminal at VIA is designed to handle 1.5 million passengers annually. The new 78,000-square meter terminal will significantly expand capacity, accommodating up to 7 million passengers each year.
With this expansion, authorities are taking steps to manage increased traffic flow efficiently, ensuring a smooth experience for visitors and residents traveling to and from the airport.
