Consumer prices in the Maldives declined for a second consecutive month this year, according to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics. In April 2025, the consumer prices in the Maldives fell by 0.50 percent compared to March 2025.
In March, a similar consumer price drop was observed compared to February 2025, with a price drop of 0.62 percent.
The price drop in April does not apply for the sea fish prices. These back-to-back drops suggest a short-term easing of inflationary pressure, particularly in the food and utility sectors.
The CPI report highlighted that fruits and vegetables saw the largest price reductions in April, with fruit prices dropping by 9.43 percent and vegetables by 7.46 percent. Electricity prices also fell by 3.56 percent. Other notable declines included motorcycles (1.40 percent), garments (0.61 percent), and restaurant and café services (0.16 percent). However, some categories experienced price increases: sea fish rose by 1.75 percent, air travel by 1.50 percent, sea fares by 0.51 percent, and home appliances by 3.33 percent.
Despite these recent monthly declines, overall consumer prices have increased by 5.62 percent over the past year, indicating that while short-term relief is evident, long-term inflation remains a concern.
