Electricity consumption in Male’ during peak hours on the first day of Ramadan was recorded at 78 megawatts, significantly lower than the usual demand during the fasting month, according to the State Electric Company (STELCO).
In a post on X, STELCO attributed the reduced usage to the rainy weather, noting that demand in both Male’ and Hulhumale’ remained lower than usual. The company also highlighted that the closure of schools and offices on the first day of Ramadan contributed to the decline in electricity consumption.
STELCO reported that peak-hour consumption, which falls between 4pm and 5pm, had only reached 78 megawatts, while usage dropped further to 68 megawatts after 6pm. The company stated that in previous years, electricity demand during peak hours in Ramadan has typically averaged around 100 megawatts.
Meanwhile, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that households will receive a 10 percent discount on electricity bills during Ramadan, continuing a practice introduced in previous years.
