FDI Should Translate Into Jobs and Business for Youth, Minister Highlights

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Maldives should contribute directly to job creation and economic opportunities for young people, according to the Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib.

At a ceremony marking the official completion of Maafaru International Airport on Tuesday, the Minister noted that the government’s policy aims to enhance the quality of life for citizens through meaningful development. He outlined the view that foreign investments must go beyond simply generating state revenue and must instead support employment and enterprise growth across the country.

The Maafaru airport project was described as a strategic development that would benefit not only Maafaru but the wider Noonu Atoll. The Minister pointed to the atoll’s appeal as a luxury tourism destination and its potential to attract further investment.

He also emphasised the importance of public participation in development, encouraging communities to actively engage with investors and resort developers. Local involvement, he said, is essential in turning national projects into inclusive ventures that deliver widespread economic benefits.

Investment in Noonu Atoll already totals in the millions of dollars, with further growth expected as connectivity improves. The Minister highlighted the need to ensure that every citizen experiences the benefits of such development on a personal level.

The Maafaru International Airport is now positioned to boost access to northern resorts and support regional economic expansion through improved infrastructure.
