The oil tanker “JIAN JIE” became the inaugural vessel to utilise the Uthuru Maritime Service (UMS) on 3rd October, marking a significant milestone for the initiative. The Panamanian ship, en route from Abu Dhabi to China, docked at Uligan in Haa Alif Atoll to access a range of services introduced under the UMS.
Upon arrival, the crew disembarked to attend the opening ceremony of the newly developed Seaman’s Rest Area on the island, where they were welcomed by the local community with traditional boduberu performances. The event was attended by notable figures, including Mohamed Wajeeh, CEO of Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), Parliamentarian Ali Moosa, and Ahmed Muaz Mohamed, President of the Uligan Island Council.
The Seaman’s Rest Area has been designed to provide a comfortable space for crew members entering through the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) gate. Here, they can relax and enjoy recreational activities. The captain of the “JIAN JIE” expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome, stating that in over two decades of sailing, he had “never experienced such complete hospitality.”
During its stay in Uligan, the vessel requested several services through UMS, including crew changes, water supply, waste disposal, and spare parts. The ship is expected to remain in the area for approximately five days while maintenance work is conducted. As part of the crew change, nine members will disembark, while six new crew members will arrive in the Maldives to join the ship.
In addition to MPL, private companies are also contributing to the provision of services for the vessels. CEO Wajeeh highlighted that the presence of the “JIAN JIE” will provide local residents with additional business opportunities during its stay. The launch of a dedicated UMS website is expected to further centralise information and services for customers, improving convenience and access.
The UMS initiative aims to enhance the Maldives’ maritime sector, offering services to international vessels and contributing to the national economy. With the successful docking of the “JIAN JIE”, the UMS is set to play a vital role in future maritime developments.
