The Maldives marked World Oceans Day with a vibrant Moodhu Fest event, where Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam stressed the importance of protecting the oceans while increasing the benefits derived from them in a sustainable way.
Speaking to state media during the event, the Minister said the main aim of Moodhu Fest was to encourage the public, especially the younger generation, to connect with the ocean and help preserve it for the future. He highlighted that experiencing the ocean first-hand was key to fostering a deeper sense of responsibility and care.
The Minister noted that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu actively supports the celebration of World Oceans Day and has encouraged the government to make research-driven decisions in the fisheries and maritime sectors. He added that the administration is prioritising the development of human capacity in the field, particularly in marine research, as part of broader efforts to address ongoing challenges in the fisheries sector.
One of the highlights of this year’s Moodhu Fest was the “Discover Dive” programme, which gave 40 children the opportunity to experience scuba diving. Many participants shared their excitement about seeing colourful coral reefs and marine life during the dive. Certificates were awarded to all the children and sponsors involved.
The event also featured a wide range of ocean-themed stalls and activities run by the Ministry, government agencies, environmental NGOs, businesses and food vendors. The festival was attended by Minister Shiyam and the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives.
