In a flag-hoisting ceremony held today, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel officially inaugurated the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in the Republic of Türkiye. The Minister of Culture and Tourism of Türkiye, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, and the Ambassador of the Maldives to Türkiye, Lieutenant General (Retd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, also attended the ceremony.
The event was also attended by the Chairperson of the Maldives–Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Honourable Dr Ümmügülşhen Öztürk; senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye; members of the business community; Turkish media; staff of the Embassy; and members of the resident Maldivian community in Ankara.
According to the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the establishment of a resident diplomatic mission in Türkiye marks a historic milestone in bilateral relations between the two nations. The Embassy will support the implementation of the Maldives’ foreign policy and assist in providing consular services to the growing Maldivian diaspora in Türkiye. It will also serve as a platform to explore new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
In his remarks, Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, highlighted the longstanding friendly relations between the Republic of Türkiye and the Maldives, rooted in mutual respect and sincerity. He noted that these ties have steadily strengthened over the years, expanding across various fields, including tourism, culture, the economy, and education.
