Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has signed a framework agreement with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) for the development of the Olympic stadium in Hulhumale’.
In September 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs signed an agreement with CMEC during an official trip to China. The agreement indicates that CMEC has to complete the research required for the development of the stadium in four months and submit the findings to the Government.
However, due to the pandemic, this was delayed and hence, a second agreement was signed between both parties.
The signing ceremony took place at Dhivehi Raajjeyge Addu’s Senaco Maalan earlier today. On behalf of the Ministry, the Director-General of Ministry of National Planning. Housing and Infrastructure, Fathimath Shana Faarooq and CMEC Chief Representative, Li Xiado signed on behalf of the company.
The new stadium is to be built in preparation to host the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) scheduled to be held in 2023. According to the proposal submitted by CMEC, the international stadium will have 20,000 seating.
