Giraavaru Falhu Project Advances with Ongoing Land Reclamation Works

Progress on the Giraavaru Falhu land reclamation project, a key initiative linked to housing development in the Malé region, is moving forward with a portion of the planned area now completed.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the site to review ongoing works and receive an update on the project’s status. The visit included a briefing on current operations, with dredging and sand filling activities underway as part of the reclamation process.

The project, implemented by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), involves reclaiming a total of 97.15 hectares of land. As of now, 35 hectares have been completed. Reclamation works resumed on 30 January 2026 following earlier phases of development.

Specialised dredging vessels, including trailing suction hopper dredgers such as Oranje and Queen of Nederlanden, are being used to carry out the reclamation work.

The development of Giraavaru Falhu is positioned within broader efforts to increase land availability in the Greater Malé region, where demand for housing and urban expansion continues to grow.

Senior government officials and MACL management were present during the visit, which focused on reviewing project progress and ongoing operations.
